Our son is 10 years old and this is his
sixth school year at Newfound. Finding Newfound has changed our son’s
life and the course of his future.
Our son was diagnosed with PDD at age 4. We had him in the PPCD program
starting at age 3 in the Missouri and Texas public school system. During
this period we also were seeking additional private occupational and
speech therapy. While our son has made promising progress in private
therapy, we were told that he was not mastering any of the goals set for
him in his “individual education plan”.
After a year and a half of disappointment and our child struggling so
much we knew we had to find another way. We knew that our son was very
bright but needed a different learning environment. After searching all
summer for a school, we found Newfound School and have been there ever
since.
Our son has made so much progress; I don’t know where he would be today
without the help of Dr. Guernsey and the staff at Newfound. Our son is
happy and enjoys school. He is continuing to learn more and more every
day. He is learning to read, do math, tell time, grow socially and
emotionally and fo all the things that “typical developing” children do,
but at his own pace.
Newfound will set a plan in action that will help your child’s
individual needs. The staff is very loving and nurturing and has taught
our son self discipline, self control and respect for others. They
genuinely care about each other and every student and want them to
succeed in every aspect of their development.
When asked to take our son to school in the mornings, we can leave
knowing that he will be safe, happy, and have all of his needs met.
Newfound is truly a school that is “one of a kind”.
My son was in the gifted program at his public school, but his ADHD and
other behavioral problems were more that school could handle. Newfound
provides an excellent environment for him to learn at his own academic
level while working on behavior and social skills within a small group
of peers. I have peace of mind knowing his special needs are being
appropriately addressed, and he feels better about himself too. Newfound
has a talented, competent staff. Their outstanding program is playing an
important role in helping my son achieve his potential as he grows up.
Newfound School has been a place of growth and success for our son
Jamie. We struggled with different programs offered at our public school
and other private institutions, but none of them were a good fit for
Jamie who is diagnosed high functioning autistic. When we found Newfound
it was an answer to prayer, finally a place that was willing to work
with us as a family, not just an individual student. Through the six
years that Jamie has attended Newfound he has grown not only
academically but emotionally. He has become much more self confident and
is really beginning to express himself more and more. He is currently in
the 10th grade and is working at his level with much success. His
teachers develop curriculum according to his way of learning so he does
not become frustrated which makes it a much more enjoyable environment
for him. The reason for Jamie’s success is because he is encouraged to
achieve certain goals and is continually challenged with fun and
interesting lessons that make school a great place to be. Newfound is
preparing our son for a life after graduation, providing him with skills
to succeed in the outside world too. We are so thankful to Dr. Robb and
Dr. Guernsey for all they have done at Newfound; it is truly a happy and
loving place to learn for Jamie.
We moved our oldest son to Newfound after being severely disappointed
with the progress he was making at another local (private) school and
after looking at several other private schools in the DFW area. During
his first year at Newfound, he progressed more quickly than we ever
imagined possible. His attitude about school also changed -- he went
from not wanting to go to school to looking forward to his morning trip
to Newfound. He loves his teacher, and very quickly learned how to say
her name! He has continued to make substantial progress at Newfound, and
has moved on to math, computers, and other new areas. Newfound also has
allowed more of his personality to come out as the teachers help him
with his communication skills. Dr. Guernsey and the Newfound teachers
genuinely care for "their" children and want nothing more than to help
each child live to his or her fullest potential. In fact, we thought so
highly of Newfound that we now have enrolled our youngest son there --
he already has made more progress in the first couple of months at
Newfound than he made during an entire year in his PPCD program. We
could not recommend the school more highly.
